If you've ever worked in design, development or publishing, you've seen it: a block of Latin-sounding nonsense that starts with the words Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. It appears in mockups, templates, wireframes and prototypes all over the world. But most people have no idea what it actually says, where it came from, or why a piece of pseudo-Latin text from the Renaissance is still in use in 2026.
The standard opening passage reads:
It's not random gibberish. It's a scrambled, slightly altered excerpt from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum — "On the Ends of Good and Evil" — written by the Roman statesman and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero in 45 BC. The original text was a philosophical treatise on ethics. The lorem ipsum version strips out meaningful words and rearranges the Latin so it looks like real text without being readable.
A rough translation of the original passage: "...nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure..."
Lorem ipsum in its current scrambled form dates back to the 1500s, when an unknown printer in Europe used it as filler text to demonstrate typefaces. Before digital design, typographers needed to show what a font looked like in a realistic block of text — but using real, readable content distracted viewers who would read the words instead of evaluating the typography.
The scrambled pseudo-Latin solved that problem neatly. It has the visual rhythm and letter distribution of natural language without being actually readable. Viewers focus on the design, not the words.
The text jumped into digital use in the 1960s when Letraset — a company making dry-transfer lettering sheets for designers — included it in their catalogue. When desktop publishing software arrived in the 1980s, Aldus PageMaker built lorem ipsum in as its default placeholder. From there it spread everywhere.
There are several practical reasons lorem ipsum has persisted:
Lorem ipsum is a tool, not a crutch. It has real drawbacks:

Open Lorem Ipsum Generator →The design world has experimented with alternatives. Some teams use "real but irrelevant" text — passages from old public domain books. Others use structured placeholder text that mimics the format of the final content (e.g. fake product names, realistic email subjects). Tools like Cupcake Ipsum, Hipster Ipsum and Cat Ipsum generate thematic placeholder text that's more entertaining in client presentations.
None have displaced lorem ipsum. After 500 years, it's the default — and understanding where it came from makes it considerably more interesting than it first appears.
