How to calculate your exact age in years, months and days

πŸ“… April 2026⏱ 3 min read🏷 Life Maths

Most people know their age in years. But your exact age β€” in years, months and days β€” is surprisingly useful and slightly tricky to calculate by hand. Here's how it works.

The simple method

To calculate exact age, you work backwards from today's date to your birth date in three steps:

  1. Years: Subtract your birth year from today's year. If today's month/day hasn't passed your birth month/day yet this year, subtract one.
  2. Months: Count the remaining months after the last full birthday year. If today's day is before your birth day, subtract one month.
  3. Days: Count remaining days from the last "complete" month to today.

A worked example

Suppose you were born on March 15, 1995 and today is April 25, 2026.

Birth date: March 15, 1995
Today: April 25, 2026

Years: 2026 βˆ’ 1995 = 31 (March 15 has already passed this year βœ“)
Months: March β†’ April = 1 full month
Days: 15 β†’ 25 = 10 days remaining

Age: 31 years, 1 month, 10 days

The tricky part is month-end arithmetic. Months have different lengths (28–31 days) so calculating across month boundaries requires borrowing β€” the same way you'd do subtraction with carrying. This is why calculators are easier for exact figures.

Why exact age matters

Your rough age is fine for most everyday purposes. Exact age matters in:

How old am I if I was born in…

The fastest way to answer any birth year question is to enter your date into the calculator. But as a rough guide: in 2026, if you were born in 1995 you're turning 31; born in 2000 you're turning 26; born in 2008 you're turning 18; born in 1980 you're turning 46.
