How to calculate your exact age in years, months and days

Most people know their age in years. But your exact age β in years, months and days β is surprisingly useful and slightly tricky to calculate by hand. Here's how it works.
The simple method
To calculate exact age, you work backwards from today's date to your birth date in three steps:
- Years: Subtract your birth year from today's year. If today's month/day hasn't passed your birth month/day yet this year, subtract one.
- Months: Count the remaining months after the last full birthday year. If today's day is before your birth day, subtract one month.
- Days: Count remaining days from the last "complete" month to today.
A worked example
Suppose you were born on March 15, 1995 and today is April 25, 2026.
Birth date: March 15, 1995
Today: April 25, 2026
Years: 2026 β 1995 = 31 (March 15 has already passed this year β)
Months: March β April = 1 full month
Days: 15 β 25 = 10 days remaining
Age: 31 years, 1 month, 10 days
The tricky part is month-end arithmetic. Months have different lengths (28β31 days) so calculating across month boundaries requires borrowing β the same way you'd do subtraction with carrying. This is why calculators are easier for exact figures.
Why exact age matters
Your rough age is fine for most everyday purposes. Exact age matters in:
- Medical contexts β paediatric dosing, developmental milestones and some clinical calculations require age in months, not just years. A 2-year-old who is 2 years 11 months is very different from one who is 2 years 1 month.
- Legal age limits β driving, voting, retirement and certain contracts activate on your exact birthday, not just "when you turn X."
- Pension and benefits calculations β many benefits accrue by exact month and year, not just calendar year.
- Insurance β premiums often change at specific age thresholds to the day.
- Sports and competition age groups β many youth categories use exact age at a specific cut-off date.

The fastest way to answer any birth year question is to enter your date into the calculator. But as a rough guide: in 2026, if you were born in 1995 you're turning 31; born in 2000 you're turning 26; born in 2008 you're turning 18; born in 1980 you're turning 46.
